New parking pay and display and permit providers for Central Bedfordshire Council

10 January 2018

Drivers using their mobile phone to pay-to-park in Central Bedfordshire car parks will need to register with a new provider from 16 January.

JustPark will be taking over the Central Bedfordshire Council contract from current provider RingGo, and will be running the service across all of the councils pay and display car parks. The switch to the new provider will save the council an estimated £60,000 a year.

The JustPark payment facilities are available at the following car parks:

  • Duncombe Drive car park, Leighton Buzzard
  • Hockcliffe Street car park, Leighton Buzzard
  • Grove Park car park, Dunstable (both the theatre side and Go Bowling side)
  • Matthew Street car park, Dunstable
  • Priory Car Park (Church Street), Dunstable
  • Regent Street car park, Dunstable
  • St Marys Gate car park, Dunstable
  • Steppingley Road car park, Flitwick (adjacent to rail station parking)

New system has user-friendly technology

The new system has user-friendly technology which should make parking easy, less stressful and time-consuming for drivers. It should also help drivers plan their journey, park, pay and get on with their day. In addition to paying in cash, you can use your mobile phone - either by calling the number on display in the car park or by using the JustPark app, at no extra cost.

You can register in advance or on-the-spot at the car park, and you’ll be set up in just a matter of minutes. You can either do this online or via an iPhone, Android or Apple Watch App. Payment can be completed in under 30 seconds, with various payment options including Apple Pay, Android Pay and PayPal one touch. There is also a dedicated local rate telephone number for customer enquiries and 24-hour payments. Customers can be transferred to the UK call centre for extra help. Notices are being placed at the relevant car parks, and JustPark will also be on-site to ask queries from the public at key times during the changeover.

Changed to supplier of parking permits

Central Bedfordshire Council has also changed their supplier of parking permits. Imperial Civil Enforcement Solutions (Permit Smarti) will take over the contract from RingGo, which will go live from 11 January. The change of supplier will not affect the current charge for permits.

Customers who use the permit system will have received a letter in advance of the changes, with an email reminder also sent to them three weeks before their permit is due to expire, to provide instructions on how to complete their renewal. Any new customers will be able to log on to the council website, where all the relevant details will be available explaining how to apply for a new permit.

Councillor Budge Wells, Deputy Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “This is about giving our residents and visitors a range of payment options. While you can still pay cash, using a mobile service means users don't need to worry about finding the right change for the car park.

“Moving the service to the JustPark app will see drivers benefit from a range of new features. The app can show you where available spaces are, and navigate you directly to your chosen car park - as well as getting you paid up and parked up easily.

“By changing supplier, it has reduced the cost of providing the service to our customers considerably. With an anticipated savings of £60,000 per year we will be able to reinvest this into improving other council services.”
